Public Speaking Circle
Nathan Phillander, a 3rd Year Medicine (and 1st year Psychology) student at UCT has an interesting skill to share: Public Speaking! Nathan says that being able to communicate well with peers / family / colleagues and/or future employers is a very valuable tool to success and happiness.
Did you know that Public Speaking is the #1 fear amongst adults worldwide? It's time to tackle this issue - at least for a group of 9-10 teenagers from Lawrence House as they will go onto their bi-weekly public-speaking-journey with Nathan!
Session 1: Mix this interesting activity with an amazing volunteer and a super-promising group of youngsters - and you get the magical atmosphere we were able to breathe in at the first session of this educational new Circle. Nathan had Lawrence Houses participants focused - and challenged - from the first to the last minute. Having admitted that Nathan himself suffers from stage fright to this day, he started off by giving an impromptu speech (it was brilliant of course!), followed by a brainstorming session on the big Do's and Do Not's of Public Speaking. This was good to know as all participants were put on the spot and asked for their first try at Public Speaking. What started with nervous fidgeting, tremor and a shaky voice for most participants ended in overcoming these fears and receiving a big round of applause. Session 1 concluded with Nathan treating us to one of his prepared speeches, bowling us over and leaving us with the wish that session 2 was already tomorrow!
Watch this space as we will fill it with descriptions of the sessions as well as photographs of this promising new Circle ...
