Herschel HER~itage Day

Sisanda’s Youth Connect programme aims to connect young volunteers from local high schools with beneficiary children from junior schools in underprivileged communities. We deliver our programme by working closely with a group of young volunteers to plan, fundraise and deliver a mini fun day out.

5 Students from the Caring for Kids group at Herschel Girls Senior School spent over 5 hours of planning sessions, working with the Sisanda team to create an inspirational day in celebration of Heritage month and Women’s Day.

On Saturday 14th September we welcomed 36 girls aged 8-10 years old from Zonnebloem Girls Primary School to work with 16 young volunteers from Herschel Girls Senior School. Our young volunteers were not only coming along to work with the children but assisted with setting up the activity spaces and leading & instructing the various activities.

In celebration of Heritage month, we invited our young learners to come dressed in traditional, South African clothing that represented where they were from. Teamed up with our bright and colourful Sisanda t-shirts; sponsored by Truworths, we were quite a colourful bunch!

Each activity station was focused around a different educational / developmental tool which was made fun and exciting by our volunteers, whilst making space and time for conversation and connection. We started the day off by splitting everyone into 4 different teams, allowing them some time to them bond and get to know each other through some fun games.

Throughout the morning the young girls participated in various sports games and races, craft activities (making photograph frames and friendship bracelets), and an inspirational treasure hunt filled with various tasks and challenges to complete. Throughout the treasure hunt the girls were required to find motivational words on a word search, learn about different South African languages, discover inspirational South African women and explore their own dreams and ambitions.

As always, Connect is an action packed day with so much learning taking place, friendships being created and incredibly special moments that we want to bottle up and keep. Both the young girls and our young volunteers come away from the day feeling empowered, confident and most importantly, valued.

We were extremely lucky to have a wonderful volunteer support from the Sisanda team come and join us for the morning. Asanda, Shameem, Thokozile and Bonga were our dream team who supported the group throughout the day and ensured everyone was happy and enjoying themselves.

A huge thank you to Miss Bulley & Mrs Buckton from Zonnebloem Girls Primary School for supporting their students throughout the day and assisting Sisanda.

Thank you to Truworths for your ongoing support of Sisanda FunDaytion and for sponsoring our fun and bright Sisanda t-shirts, the children absolutely loved wearing them! Everyone was united for the day and became part of the Sisanda family.

Thank you to the HCI Foundation for sponsoring our transport with Golden Arrow, you enable us to access the children and bring them out of their communities to enjoy our Connect events at various locations.

Thank you to Herschel Girls Senior School for providing us with a safe & secure space to work in and to Anna, Shivi, Georgia, Kendal and Aria for their time and energy planning and delivery a seriously wonderful event.

Finally, a huge thank you to all the volunteers from Herschel Girls High School for giving up your time to volunteer and work with our beneficiary children. The smiles, laughter and energy thrived throughout the day and made it such a special time for everyone involved.
