The Fun Day outreach model is sustainable, relatively inexpensive and emotionally rewarding. It also provides immediate results.
Since March 2009 Sisanda FunDaytion has held at least one Fun Day per month and made a difference in the lives of more than 3675 children and over 1285 volunteers. We have facilitated Fun Days in collaboration with children’s charities in impoverished areas, ranging from HIV clinics and convalescent hospitals, to community centres and children's homes.
We create experiential days in areas of natural beauty or at locations that are generally difficult for many children to access. We include visits to cultural events and unique places of interest. We encourage the children to try something new and to learn new skills, always ensuring that Fun Days are entertaining, educational and inspiring. >
We facilitate interaction between the children and the volunteers by grouping 2 to 3 children per adult and by playing fun games that encourage social interaction to help the children engage more comfortably with new mentors. We have also facilitated opportunities for adolescents to be volunteer mentors for younger children through our Leadership days.
We spend loads of time and energy planning our programmes and events to ensure that every Fun Day is safe and makes a difference in the lives of our children and volunteers. Each Fun Day is either a full or a half day and starts with a volunteer visit to the children’s home or community centre before heading off together with the children to start enjoying the Day. Snacks and lunch are important energizers and a fun Photo at the end helps to keep the memories alive.
