After experiencing Saturday’s events it became clear that those wonderful children were teaching me life-skills too!

Sisanda Connect- Wednesday

Our first holiday programme, affectionately called Sisanda Connect, saw us spend the week with over 120 children from the Amy Biehl Foundation's educational programmes in Gugulethu, Nyanga, Philippi, Crossroads and Manenberg. Sisanda Connect was initiated as a fun way for teenagers to connect with younger children from disadvantaged communities. With 5 activity leaders, 20 teenage volunteers and 40 children per day. We had a marvelous time painting faces, playing silly games, singing songs, decorating cupcakes, dancing, running races, drawing, painting, eating, planting seedlings and generally getting to know one another.

A large part of our program was celebrating Nelson Mandela's (then upcoming) 95th birthday. When the children arrived they were paired up with their groups for the day before adding a thumbprint to our Sisanda Connect tree and a hand print to our Madiba Birthday banner. These simple art activities started our day with a team effort and a celebratory vibe. It was so nice to hear the beautiful things that the children had to say about Nelson Mandela. My favourite quote was when one little boy said, 'Tata Madiba is the best because.... he's great!'

Our teen-aged volunteers were so wonderful with the children and it was truly heart-warming to see them learning from each other and bonding throughout the day. Sisanda Connect was started because of an identified need for children to keep busy and be stimulated during the holiday period and for youth to have an opportunity to give back and volunteer. With a strong emphasis on togetherness we made the day as interactive, inspiring and fun as possible. Sisanda FunDaytion is proud to say that we loved our pilot program and look forward to doing another one soon.
